Position Summary
The Data Integration Intern will assist in developing connections to various data sources, integrating data into existing systems, and supporting the automation of annual reporting processes with a sustainability focus. This role will be instrumental in aligning data integration tasks with the University of Florida’s sustainable development goals (SDGs), leveraging technology to enhance our sustainability efforts.
Specific tasks will include assisting with data integration for the Sustainability Indicator Management & Analysis Platform (SIMAP) greenhouse gas inventory, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s Sustainability Tracking Assessment & Rating System (AASHE STARS), and the University of Florida’s Board of Governors annual report. The intern will work with databases such as the UF Space Tracking and Reporting System (STARS), Skyspark building metering and operational information system, and UF sustainability centralized database. They will also gain exposure to standard programming languages like SQL, C++, Java, as well as custom programming language called Axon.
This role is ideal for a student with strong computer language skills, an understanding of database structures and web development, and a passion for sustainability. The intern will actively contribute to ensuring that our data management processes support broader sustainability objectives and SDGs.
This position is structured to be a year-long opportunity and will remain active as long as the student is enrolled at UF. It is not limited to a single semester and can extend throughout the school year and beyond, contingent upon continued student status at the university.
Primary Focus
The primary focus of the Sustainability Data Integration Intern is to:
- Develop connections to various data sources for centralized data polling, including energy and sustainability metrics such as Metric tons of CO2 equivalent (MTCO2e), kilowatt hours (kWh), Natural Gas therms, British Thermal Units (BTUs), and Chilled water tons of cooling.
- Utilize the centralized database to generate impactful status tracking reports including but not limited to greenhouse gas inventories (GHGI), energy reduction projects that reduces our GHG, Climate Action Plan Status report, and other programs emphasizing sustainability initiatives aligned with the SDG’s.
- Assist in automating annual utility reports GHGI, and other reports to minimize manual intervention, thereby supporting the university’s commitment to sustainable development through technological efficiency.
Preferred Skills
The preferred skills for the Sustainability Data Integration Intern are:
- Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, SQL, C++).
- Understanding of website development and database structures.
- Knowledge of artificial intelligence for data mining and reporting.
- Familiarity with marketing software platforms for professional report development.
- Awareness of sustainable practices in data management and reporting.
Qualifications
- Must be a current student in good academic standing (GPA 2.0 or above).
- Strong computer language skills.
- Self-directed with the ability to manage projects and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively in a group setting, collaborating with team members on sustainability initiatives.
- Sustainably minded and able to communicate effectively, including proactively managing deadlines and adapting to project needs as required.
Work Expectations
- Commitment of at least 10 hours per week, up to a max of 20 hours per week with student work approval.
- In-person position with a dedicated workstation at the Facilities Services Maintenance Compound.
- Hourly pay for undergraduates is $12, and $15 for graduate students.
