Environmental justice plays a powerful role in the social, economic and environmental sustainability of a higher education institution. Considering environmental justice principles allows for more resilient planning and decision-making by the university.
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), environmental justice is “the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.” There are several policies and programs at UF that touch on this intersection of people and planet in various ways.
Resources are provided to UF faculty and staff to ensure that all employees feel comfortable, safe, and heard. It is imperative that all employees receive equal opportunity and treatment throughout their careers.
Sustainability encourages collaboration and open communication! We learn from those whose experiences, beliefs, and perspectives are different from our own. Good communication and a sense of community help us foster the relationships and conversations necessary to bring about change for sustainability as well as helping to foster a holistic climate at UF.
