Energy use is the primary contributor to the University of Florida’s overall greenhouse gas emissions. UF is working to address energy use in several ways across campus. From energy conservation & efficiency policies to staff & faculty initiatives, these programs are helping to reduce energy needs, minimize costs and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
To address the carbon impact of buildings on campus, UF Facilities Services, Facilities Planning and Construction and our Auxiliaries Maintenance staff are working hard to reduce energy use by constructing more efficient buildings, managing building temperatures with programs such as holiday setbacks, retrofitting lighting systems, and doing maintenance and through renovations to heating, ventilation and air condition systems across campus.
All members of the UF community can help UF chomp down on energy through energy conservation best practices. Educational materials are available through the Office of Sustainability. Learn more about what you and your department can do for energy conservation at UF.

Starting in 2010, UF has been involved with a variety of solar energy projects on campus. The most recent addition of 100kW was made possible by Progress Energy Florida’s SunSense Solar Schools Program and was divided among three locations on campus in the fall of 2012.
In response to UF’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2025, the Neutral UF Coalition was launched as a multi-faceted initiative to reduce overall GHG emissions of the university by impacting the footprint of various areas. In addition to bolstering ongoing programs such as GROW – Green Recognition for Offices & Workspaces which addresses energy & resource consumption on the office level, the Coalition features the Carbon Neutral Commuter Program.
The Office of Sustainability, in collaboration with several partners at UF, is looking to revise and update the Climate Action Plan that was published in 2009. This process began to take shape in January 2020 but due to COVID-19, is expected to continue through 2021 with the goal of completion by December 2021.
